去年12月26日晚上8時26分，屏東恆春西南方22.8公里處發生芮氏規模6.7的地震，之後又陸續發生強震，造成史上最嚴重國際通訊海底電纜中斷事故。
根據中華電信測試，計中美海纜、法新歐亞3號等9路海底電纜中斷，1月3日起，該公司陸續委請至少5艘國外海纜作業船來台修復海纜，預計1月底前可全面修復。
中華電信國際通信分公司網路處處長吳志明說，本次海纜斷點深度從海平面下900至3000多公尺均有，由於人類潛水極限約為海面下200公尺，修復船上配備有海底機器人（潛游埋設機），可克服人類潛水限制，在深海進行海纜勾撈及鋪設作業。
